John Apitz is a shareholder with Messerli & Kramer and a member of its Government Relations Group. He is acknowledged for his deep understanding of government affairs and for his ability to successfully guide clients through the often complex maze of legislative processes.
John’s understanding of government dealings was gained over an extensive career in federal and state agencies and through his representation of clients before state and local governments. He began his career on the staff of the late U.S. Senator Hubert H. Humphrey and later held high level positions with the U.S. Department of Agriculture, the Minnesota Department of Commerce and the Office of the Minnesota Attorney General.
Recognized for his strength in strategic planning and communications, John has also worked on numerous campaigns and served as the campaign manager for former Congressman Tim Penny and as a campaign director for former St. Paul Mayor and U.S. Senator Norm Coleman. He is proud to represent great leaders and frequently consults with local and state officials on campaigns and grassroots efforts.
Since joining Messerli & Kramer in 1989, John has represented dozens of private companies and public entities. His notable successes include securing funding the Minnesota Railroad Service Improvement program, creation of the ARMER (Allied Radio Matrix for Emergency Response) statewide emergency public safety communications system, implementing an agricultural lien notification system and securing funding of numerous exhibits that enhance the Minnesota Zoo.
John has served on the Board of Directors for the History Theatre, a professional theatre in downtown St. Paul, since 1993. John is passionate about advocating for the theatre and has served as its President, Vice President and Secretary.
